Israel confirmed early on November 30 that a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip would extend for at least one more day, with eight Israeli hostages reportedly set to be released by the Hamas Movement.

Shortly before the 7 a.m. [local time] deadline to restart fighting, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that “in light of the mediators’ efforts to continue the process of releasing the hostages and subject to the terms of the agreement, the ceasefire will continue.”

The agreement to extend the ceasefire came after reports of clashes in Gaza. The IDF announced late on November 29 that it had killed three Palestinians in the northern part of the Strip who posed a threat to its troops.

As part of the agreement, Hamas will need to release at least ten hostages for every extra day of the ceasefire. Israel in turn will also release 30 Palestinian prisoners.

Following various reports in Hebrew media about Hamas providing a list of additional hostages that was deemed unacceptable by Israel, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that it had received a list “in accordance with the terms of the outline, and therefore, the pause will continue.”

Unconfirmed reports in Hebrew media suggested that there were eight hostages on the list, and that Hamas had included either two Russian-Israelis who had already been released on November 29 in a side deal with Moscow, or the bodies of Israeli hostages, among the ten slated for release, in a fudging of the terms of the deal.

From its side, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the one-day extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, saying that it will be under the same terms as the previous six days. Previous days had seen a minimum of ten Israelis freed per day.

Hamas released 16 hostages on November 29. 12 Israelis, including the two Russian citizens, and four Thai nationals. In return, Israel freed 30 Palestinians, all women and children, from its prisons.

Israel estimates that about 145 hostages are still being held in Gaza and insists that Hamas release all remaining civilian women and children, estimated to be around 15, before additional agreements are considered.
