The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza, which is run by the Hamas Movement, warned on October 11 of a disruption to healthcare services across the strip as hospitals don’t have enough beds to accommodate the wounded from Israeli strikes.
“Hospitals have run out of bed capacity. The injured and ill people are on the floor as the Israeli aggression intensifies,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry noted that the continued Israeli cutting of electricity, water and fuel “poses a danger to the lives of the injured and ill and will lead to a disastrous health and environmental catastrophe.”
“We hold the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the lives of the injured and ill, as it exhausted the health system and weakened its capacity,” it added.
The ministry also warned that the health situation in Gaza “can’t bear silence” and “there must be immediate action to secure a safe corridor for medical supplies.”
The announcement came as Israel stepped up strikes on Gaza, targeting residential buildings and infrastructures in some cases without any prior warning.
Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza launched a large-scale attack against nearby Israeli military positions and settlements on October 7, killing some 1,300 and wounding more than 3,300. In response Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant ordered on October 9 a “complete siege” on the strip, saying that Israel was at war with “human animals.”
By October 12, the death toll from Israeli strikes on Gaza exceeded 1,200 with more than 5,600 others wounded. The Health Ministry in the strip said that over 60% of Palestinian casualties were women and children.
In addition to the heavy human losses, Israeli strikes forced more than 338,000 Palestinains to leave their homes in Gaza, according to the latest update by the United Nations.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is expected to worsen as Israel is reportedly preparing to launch a ground operation against Hamas and other factions in the strip, the home to more than two million people. Such an offensive will likely lead to casualties in the tens or even hundreds of thousands.
