The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on November 20 that a reserve soldier was killed and a senior officer was seriously wounded during fighting in the northern Gaza Strip a day earlier.
The slain soldier was named by the IDF as Sergeant First Class Roi Sasson of the Kfir Brigade’s Nahshon Battalion. The commander of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Yoel Glickman, was seriously wounded in the same incident, according to the military.
Hebrew media reported that the circumstances of the deadly incident, which occurred in the town of Beit Lahiya, were still being probed by the IDF.
Just three days earlier, two soldiers from the Nahshon Battalion, Captain Yogev Pazy and Staff Sergeant Noam Eitan, were killed during an exchange of fire with fighters from the Gaza-ruling Hamas Movement in Beit Lahiya, according to an IDF probe.
Pazy was a platoon commander in the Nahshon Battalion. The military said at the time that another soldier with the battalion was seriously wounded in the same incident.
In recent days, the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, released several videos showing its fighters clashing with IDF troops in Beit Lahia, the Jabalya refugee camp and several districts within Gaza City in the northern part of the Strip.
Several armored vehicles and soldiers of the IDF can be seen being hit by rocket-propelled grenades, explosive devices and sniper fire in the videos.
In recent weeks, the IDF expanded its ground operations in northern Gaza, from Jabalia to the nearby town of Beit Lahia and Gaza City, killing more than a thousand Palestinian and displacing tens of thousands others.
The latest deaths brought Israel’s toll in the ground operations against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza and along its border to 380. More than 2,400 others have been reportedly wounded. In addition, over 500 vehicles were hit in the Strip, according to Hebrew media. A helicopter also crashed.
On the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war on Gaza has exceeded 43,900, with women and children making up most of the casualties.
Despite taking more losses and failing to achieve any of its declared objectives, Israel appears to be determined to go on with its war on Gaza.
