On October 22, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that it had attacked “dozens” of targets of the Hamas Movement in the Gaza Strip overnight.

“Throughout the day, dozens of tunnel shafts, munitions warehouses, headquarters and operational military bases were destroyed,” the IDF said, adding that mosques were also targeted as they were used by Hamas’s fighters.

The IDF also announced that two of Hamas’s Nukhba commando forces were killed in a strike near the Gaza fence last night, adding that other fighters of the movement were also killed in the same strike.

Later, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari revealed that a senior Hamas commander was killed in one of the strikes that hit Gaza overnight

“We are not stopping our attacks on the Strip,” he says, adding that dozens of Hamas members, including the deputy commander of the group’s rocket array, were killed in overnight strikes.

“We are increasing the attacks in the Gaza Strip in order to reduce the threats to our forces in preparation for the next phase of the war,” he says, referring to Israel’s expected ground operation.

While the IDF claimed that its recent strikes hit military targets only, Hamas officials said that 55 people were killed and 30 homes were destroyed in Gaza overnight.

At least 11 Palestinians were killed and dozens others were wounded in a single Israeli strike that targeted a cafe in Khan Younis city in southern Gaza late on October 21, according to Wafa news agency. Khan Younis is where people displaced from the northern part of the Strip are taking refuge after their homes were destroyed.

In an update on October 22 afternoon, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, said that 4741 Palestinians have been killed and more than 15898 have been wounded by Israeli strikes since the outbreak of the war. More than 1,700 children are reportedly among the dead.

The IDF heavy bombardment didn’t prevent Hamas from launching more attacks from Gaza. The group fired rockets at the settlement of Nirim near the Strip as well as the city of Tel Aviv in central Israel and Bet Shemesh settlement near Jerusalem city. The group also targeted an IDF gathering near Mavki’im settlement and an artillery position close to the settlement of Re’im.

Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, also announced that its fighters clashed with an Israeli unit that attempted to advance to the east of Khan Yunis. Two armored bulldozers and a tank were destroyed by the fighters, who forced the unit to retreat, according to a statement by al-Qassam.

Hebrew media said that a military vehicle was hit by a guided missile close to Kissufim settlement and four troops were wounded.

Death toll on the Israeli side remains at 1,405 with more than 5,132 wounded. The IDF said in a new update on October 22, that the number of Israeli civilians and troops being held as hostages by Hamas in Gaza is 212.

Late on October 21, Hamas said that it was willing to unconditionally release two civilian hostages on humanitarian ground, but the Israeli government refused the initiative. The next day, the office of the Israeli Prime Minister denied knowledge of such an offer.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. At least 17 aid trucks crossed from Egypt through the Rafah crossing on October 22. However, the Strip remains in need of all sorts of supplies, including fuel, according to various reports.

According to Hebrew media reports, the IDF completed preparations for a ground operation in Gaza and is awaiting the order from the political leadership.

The Israeli invasion will certainly bring more destruction and death of the Strip, where more than two million Palestinians live. It will also lead to a dangerous military escalation in different parts of the Middle East. Israel could face attacks from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and even Yemen.
