On October 29 afternoon, fighters from the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions launched an attack against Israeli troops advancing in the northern Gaza Strip.
The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said in an initial statement that several vehicles were “burned” and a number of troops were killed to the west of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Erez site.
In another statement, the faction said that two main battle tanks of the IDF were completely destroyed to the northwest of Gaza. Later, intense rocket and mortar strikes targeted Israeli reinforcements in the same area.
From its side, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second largest faction in Gaza, said that its military wing, the al-Quds Brigade, had shelled advancing Israeli troops in the Waha area to the northwest of the city of Beit Lahia in the northern part of the Strip.
Galei Tzahal, the IDF’s radio, reported that a number of Palestinian fighters came out of a tunnel in northern Gaza, several hundred meters from the Erze site, and began to clash with Israeli troops. Some of the fighters were killed, according to the radio station.
Before the Palestinian attack, the IDF announced that an officer was seriously hurt by a mortar impact and separately a soldier was moderately hurt during clashes in northern Gaza overnight.

IDF troops advanced some three kilometers along the Gaza coast since the start of the expanded ground operation in the Strip two days ago. Despite this advance, Palestinian rocket attacks on nearby settlements and cities in central Israel continue.
The IDF stepped up strikes on northern Gaza in recent hours, with some of the strikes targeting the vicinity of the al-Quds Hospital in the city of Gaza.
In its most recent update, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said that the death toll from Israeli strikes has risen to 8,005. The fatalities included 3324 children, 2062 women and 460 elderly. More than 20,000 others have been wounded since the war broke out, according to the ministry.
On the Israeli side, the death toll remains at 1,405. The casualties include 311 troops and 58 police officers. In addition, more than 5,000 Israelis have been wounded, so far. The official number of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 surprise attack remains at 230.
According to a report by The New York Times, Israel made the decision to hold off on a full-scale invasion of Gaza and instead conduct more limited ground incursions, at least for the time being. This decision aligns with suggestions that the United States Defense Secretary, Lloyd J. Austin III, made to his Israeli counterparts in recent days.
Israel is likely trying to appease the U.S. in order to solicit more support from it. At the same time, the IDF does not appear to be ready to take more losses.
