The Saudi-led organization announces the decision amid a failure of Suni militant groups in Syria.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has classified Lebanese movement Hezbollah as a “terrorist” organisation, citing “hostile actions” by the armed wing of the group.
On Mar.2, GCC Secretary General Abdullatif al-Zayani said that 6 GCC members states made the move because “the [Hezbollah] militia recruited young people [of the Gulf] for terrorist acts”.
The Saudi-led GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Hezbollah, a Shia political organisation located mainly in Lebanon. In Syria, its armed wing is fighting alongside the government of President Bashar al-Assad against Sunni militant groups [ISIS, Al Nusra etc].
Hezbollah is backed by Saudi Arabia’s regional rival Iran, with whom relations have worsened this year. Saudi Arabia and Iran are on opposing sides in conflicts in Syria and Yemen.
The GCC decision was made amid Saudi Arabia’s political and military failure in Syria where Saudi-backed militant groups were pushed to peace or recogized “terrorists” according to the US & Russia promoted ceasefire.
So, the only organisation to give the Israelis a bloody nose in recent times gets classified as a terrorist organisation by supposed enemies of Israel. The bizarre thing is, is that there’s probably more chance of a lasting peace between Israel and Hez than there is between the GCC and anyone else.
