Georgia's Ruling Party Wins Parliamentary Elections Despite Dissatisfaction Of Western-Backed Forces

The parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on October 26. On October 27, it became obvious that the Georgian Dream party, which is the ruling party in Georgia at present, has won the elections and is going to secure a comfortable majority in the country’s legislature. This happened despite strong resistance of Western-backed opposition parties, a network of various NGOs and mainstream media outlets, which were working against the balanced political posture demonstrated by the Georgian Dream party in these turbulent times.

According to official figures released by the Central Electoral Commission after counting of votes from 99.96% of polling stations:

  • the Georgian Dream garnered 53.91%,
  • the Coalition for Change – 11.03%,
  • the Unity-National Movement party – 10.16%,
  • the Strong Georgia coalition – 8.81%,
  • the Gakharia For Georgia party – 7.77%.

The interesting fact is that after the first publication of voting data three opposition parties declared that they do not recognize results of the election. The country’s Western-leaning president Salome Zourabichvili, who spent a notable part of the recent months of her “presidency term” in the United States, claimed that the election has been won by the European Georgia party (this party ran as a member of the coalition led by the Unity-National Movement) with over 52% result.

Currently, Zourabichvili as well as representatives of opposition parties are calling for protests in an attempt to set up a coup and change the results of the election. This move was in fact supported by their Western sponsors with “international observers” speculating about “hate speech against the opposition”.

In own turn, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the results of the parliamentary vote showed a decline in the opposition’s rating in the past years.

“The radical opposition garnered more than 845,000 votes at the previous vote in 2021 while this time [the radical opposition] only [scored] 770,000 votes. This means that apart from the fact that our rating and the support of the Georgian Dream have risen seriously, the support of the radical opposition in the Georgian society declined during this difficult period, during those four years as well,” he said.

Despite all the fury and complains of Western-backed forces, the people’s strong support to the ruling party creates serious obstacles for the seizure of power through street protests. In the current conditions, the chances that the opposition parties directed by their foreign sponsors will be able to influence the results of elections through violence and other “color revolution” tricks seem to be low. However, the opposition will likely contribute all possible efforts to bring the internal political situation in Georgia into instability.
