A German warship operating as a part of the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL) shot down on October 17 a drone off the Lebanese coast.
The Braunschweig-class corvette Ludwigshafen am Rhein fired at the drone at around 07:00 a.m. local time [04:00 GMT], a spokesperson for the Germany military, the Bundeswehr, was cited by the German DPA news agency as saying.
The drone was reportedly shot down around 30 kilometers to the northwest of the port city of Naqoura in southern Lebanon, where the UNIFIL is headquartered. It was partially recovered and will be examined. None of the crew was hurt, nor was there material damage to the warship
The Bundeswehr spokesperson said German forces were in an “increased risk situation” in Lebanon and that “appropriate protective measures” are currently being taken.
Germany’s military currently staffs Ludwigshafen am Rhein with 60 crew members as well as 40 further troops at the UN headquarters in Nakura.
The drone interception comes amid a heated battle in southern Lebanon between Hezbollah or the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The origins of the drone remain unclear.
Tensions between Israel and UNIFIL have been on the rise. The IDF attacked the international force more than once in recent days, wounding a number of peacekeepers. In addition, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu angered European allies in recent days by insisting that the force leave its posts in southern Lebanon.
