Germany is secretly building a network of railways that will be used for the rapid transfer of troops to the eastern flank of NATO and Ukraine, Der Tagesspiegel reported on August 27.
The newspaper said that work on the network involves secret groups made up of the German military in addition to the railway companies DB Cargo and DB InfraGO.
The German railway company Deutsche Bahn and its subsidiary DB Cargo were ridiculed. Nevertheless, after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the company was able to demonstrate its unrealized potential.
“Deutsche Bahn is a partner of the German operational plan to work with the German armed forces and NATO members to meet new challenges in Europe, including in the field of military logistics. This partnership is already supported by an efficient transport network,” a representative of the company told Der Tagesspiegel.
The effectiveness of the company’s capabilities and the railway network was demonstrated when an entire German military brigade was recently deployed to Lithuania within six weeks.
Sigrid Nikutta, head of DB Cargo, said in February at the Munich Security Conference that 18 tanks or 60 containers of ammunition could be transported on one train. According to Nikutta, a train with such capabilities weighs 1,000 tons. It’s worth noting that a single Leopard 2 type main battle tank weighs 84 tons.
To help Ukraine against Russia, military equipment is being transported from Baltic Sea ports to a logistics center south of Krakow in Poland, and then to the country.
According to Der Tagesspiegel, Ukraine was able to lay almost world-standard gauge railway tracks near Lviv. The country’s Soviet-era railways have different qualities, for example, they are wider.
“According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the creation of a basic network of military railways has almost been completed in Germany. The basic network of military roads already exists. It includes roads suitable for military transportation,” Der Tagesspiegel’s report reads.
The planned German railway network poses a serious threat to Russia, one that goes even beyond the scope of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Besides allowing Germany and the rest of NATO to ship military equipment to Ukraine, the network can help them mobilize on the eastern flank faster than before, possibly for an attack on Russia.

in the age of pinpoint missile accuracy — railroads seems like a lost cause in modern warfare in the eventuality of full blown global conflict. russia would disable these in the first week.
