Germany To Supply Ukraine With Dozens Of Radar-Guided Anti-Aircraft Guns

Antiaircraft Tank Gepard 1A2, 31 January 2008, by Wikimedia user Hans-Hermann Bühling.

On April 26, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht announced that the German government had authorized Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to transfer 50 Flakpanzer Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAGs) to Ukraine.

Lambrecht announced the move during her opening remarks at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, ahead of a US-hosted defense conference meant to support the Kiev regime against the Russian military who is currently conducting a special military operation in Ukraine.

“Yesterday we decided that Germany will make the delivery of ‘Gepard’ anti-aircraft tanks possible to Ukraine,” DW quoted Lambrecht as saying.

The Gepard SPAAG was developed in the 1960s, fielded in the 1970s, and has been upgraded several times with the latest electronics. In Germany, the Gepard was phased out in late 2010.

The vehicle is based on the hull of the Leopard 1 tank with a fully rotating turret armed with a pair of 35 mm Oerlikon KDA autocannons, which have an effective range of 5.5 kilometers. A mix of 320 anti-air and 20 armour-piercing rounds is usually loaded in each gun. The combined rate of fire for the two guns is 1,100 rounds per minute.

The Gepard is equipped with an S-band search radar and a Ku band tracking radar, both with a range of 15 kilometers. The SPAAG is also equipped with a laser-range finder.

The German plan to supply Ukraine with the Gepard SPAAGs is already running into some issues. Switzerland is reportedly blocking the transfer of the 35 mm ammunition needed for the vehicles’ autocannons to Ukraine.

The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said on April 26 that it had received two requests from Germany to transfer to Ukraine ammunition it had previously received from Switzerland. One concerned 35 mm ammunition for the Gepard SPAAG. The other concerned 12.7 mm ammunition.

“Both inquiries by Germany as to whether the ammunition received from Switzerland may be transferred to Ukraine were answered in the negative with reference to Swiss neutrality and the mandatory rejection criteria of Swiss war material legislation,” SECO said in a statement to Swiss broadcaster SRF.

If supplied to Ukraine, the Gepard SPAAG will pose a real threat to Russian attack helicopters and drones. However, it will not likely be as effective against fighter jets.

Germany moved from the being the main opponent of arming the Kiev regime, to one of its biggest military supporters. In the last two months, Germany supplied Ukraine with thousands of anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons.

Like the rest of Kiev’s Western allies, Germany hopes that its military support will lead to the failure of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. As of now, Western military support have only prolonged the war, worsened the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and hindered peace talks.

From Moon of Alabama: “two people I knew were trained as gunners for the Gepard. (…). It took 6 months of training to become a reasonably good tank gunner. It took 12 month, including hundreds of hours in a simulator, to become a gunner on a Gepard. The commander role required even more training. (…) There are probably less than ten people in the current Bundeswehr who still know how to operate and maintain a Gepard. There is thus little chance to find German crews for them. If the Ukrainians really want to use these outdated systems they will have to train fresh crews for at least a year. Otherwise those guns will be ineffective and of little use.”

No training required

What’s the dif? Those Ukies just fire into the air and hope it lands on enemy territory somewhere. Soldier, civilian – all good for them.

Christ de nazi ! The Russians should stop oil and natural gas deliveries to Germany and let them suffer. to remind them what they’ve done between 1941 -1943 to the Russian and what have been the response afterward, could happen but this time , without a fight, Germany will collapse economically with his EU scumbags/criminals.

Let me tell you this, you’re the one ”s” who’s gonna bark and cry this time. The time for EU to collapse is at the horizon. YOU, GERMANS, you haven’t learned anything from WW2, the Russians did and they got wiser, YOU, EU/US, you have fallen into their trap, this time you will pay for your arrogance.

R. Robertson

The Germans need the EU. If they go back to the Deutsche Mark… their consumer goods become to expensive for the rest of Europe. The entire existence of the German economy now rests on the foundation of the Euro. If each country goes back to national currencies, the German economy will quickly enter recession. The only way to avoid such an occurrence would be for all European economies to adopt German standards in labor and business. Otherwise cheaper Southern & Eastern European labor would make short work of the German economy.

Germany created the Euro for the reason of providing jobs in Germany, to avoid recession, high unemployment, etc. The US already experiences the effects of American corporations that use low-wage, low regulatory countries to cripple The US.

Charles Homer

As shown in this article, it’s not just a shortage of natural gas that Europe will have to deal with as a result of its anti-Russia sanctions:

https://viableopposition.blogspot.com/2022/04/europes-uranium-vulnerability-another.html

Europe is caught in an energy nightmare of its own making, an unintended consequence of sanctioning Russia for its moves into Ukraine.

Adam Smith's guiding hand

This is true and a cogent observation.

R. Robertson

The globalists and their lackeys (such as Hunter Biden) found plenty in Kiev.

Ukraine reminded me of Cuba being run by Italian mafia and American corporations, turning the island into a giant brothel. That was before Castro cleaned them out. Interestingly enough? Castro went to meet President Eisenhower in New York City, to discuss establishing a democracy in Cuba. After being snubbed by America? Kruschev heard about it and had a meeting with Castro, promising unconditional support for a Cuban communist country.

The other issue that American leadership had with Castro? Castro seized corporate and Mafia property; the same corporations and Mafia that had turned Cuba into a sh*thole paradise for criminals. Castro wanted to make American corporations and the Mafia pay for their crimes in Cuba. This at a time when American politicians had very close ties to the Mafia since WWII days in America in Italy. Eisenhower was elected by a business coalition, replacing Truman. Eisenhower realized too late that he had been the useful tool of corporations and criminals. Hence, his famous speech about the MIC, warning America.

Ukraine had become the 21st century equivalent of pre-1959 Cuba. Similar but not necessarily the same in all aspects. Close enough.

Hardly unintended. The global elites plainly state that we are in a transitional period to phase out fossil fuels. Essentially everyone except for the lucky few is intended to be cut off from energy.

Vlad butcha orc

Russia trashed its status as a reliable contract partner too now. It’s just speeding up the transition in Europe with this approach.

For Poland it doesn’t matter anyway anymore, as they are independent already. For Bulgaria, Russia now lost one of its last supporters too with it.

Russia is hooked off from Europe even faster. And gas can’t be simply diverted either. The possibility for Gazprom, having to close some of their gas resources forever and losing all possible profits becomes more realistic.

Not a good position Russia is in either. Europe will cope with this in the mid to long-term, unlike Russia, which is losing out even more.

R. Robertson

Unless the contracts specifically stated payment in one preferred currency such as the Euro? Which appears not to be the case… Russia is perfectly within their contractual rights to require payment in roubles.

While Western headlines scream “Russia cut Poland off from gas”, the articles with those headlines frequently failed to mention that Poland refused to pay for the gas in roubles. In this case, Poland was in breach of contract.

The “best and brightest” EU bureaucrats, Masters of The EU, apparently failed to read the contracts.

Also, any EU state that provides arms (also, training) to Ukrainian armed forces, become a co-belligerent – subject to attack – under international law. In this case, contracts can be canceled. Any Russian gas flowing to the EU is due to Russian benevolence. FDR had to force American banks and industry leaders to stop supplying the Nazi war machine, in 1942… months after Nazi Germany had declared war on The US. FDR threated the American business leaders with treason – which would have resulted in the nationalization of those private companies and death by hanging of the likes of Rockefellers.

They are basically just Leopard 1’s with a different turret. But you don’t put them at the front, really, so armor is not as important – the tank base is just for terrain mobility. If memory serves their target range is some 6 km. The radar goes further than that so it seems rather easy to hit it with radar homing missiles from a Sukhoi before they get in firing range.

But I reckon that they will never reach the battlefield with train substations out of order now.

Vlad butcha orc

Depends on the type of equipment installed. Radar range was about 15km, firing range up to 6 or 6.5km with the old models (before upgrades were installed). Beyond that accuracy is decreasing a lot.

Not sure how the upgrades were affecting both.

Peter The Ungrateful

6 km was the firing range with the latest upgrades installed IIRC. And because the radar range is so much longer they can be detected from far outside their firing range – missile away and wait for the splash.

Vlad butcha orc

The latest upgrades got missiles too or at least were planned before phaseout. Not sure which type and range, probably a Stinger type?

But most of them won’t have the latest upgrades anyway before they got stored.

Surely nothing that would be used close to the front lines, especially as some man pad types exceed its range or are close to it anyway and are far more flexible to use.

Up to 6.5km was realistic, but I wouldn’t be surprised if official ranges are lower. And I doubt a crew with basic training would manage such ranges besides a luck shot.

Vlad butcha orc

I stand corrected, those from the base defense must have had the upgrades already. Our radars were assigning targets to the different batteries, the Nikes and Hawks back then.

The Gepards themselves weren’t in the system however. Not sure if they got included later on.

Good luck training the crew in a timely fashion so they don’t come too late to the party. Let alone maintenance and spare parts. The west is getting rid of its scrap metal to be dumped on Ukrainian soil. Guess why Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is the supplier: they have them in store since the German military has phased them out.

If they even make it to the battlefield – a big if – then their radar paints a nice target on their backs.

Look at the Southfront map from the 8th of March. Nothing changed essentially.

Peter The Ungrateful

A lot has changed in the numbers of targets hit and Ukrops destroyed. They are dug in pretty good there, so let artillery and air force do their thing. No use in rushing. Russia has the upper hand and maximizes enemy losses while minimizing their own. There are also some reports of Ukrop troops having to ration ammo already. Out of fuel and ammo they will either surrender or be obliterated. You will see a lot more movement on the map after that will have happened. Or Ukraine capitulates before that, which seems unlikely though.

Vlad butcha orc

If you say so …

Peter The Ungrateful

Look at what Ukrop commanders on the receiving end have to say. And that is POLITICO, hardly an outlet for Russian propaganda. The narrative seems to crumble…

Vlad butcha orc

That’s nothing new. And the opinion of a lieutenant is one of many. Nevertheless I believe him that situation isn’t easy for them, but no serious person said it would be easy to withstand the orcs. Nevertheless they do.

Make no mistake, this war can last for years and Russia is barely inching forward. Even if the Ukraine would be losing 2:1 or even 3:1 against Russia, it will be a loss for Russia in the end, as they run out of manpower first. However, the defenders always enjoy the better protection and usually lose less than an invader.

And Putin cannot afford to admit war before the 9th of May anyway, even afterwards he would have to wait before admitting it, which would be a massive humiliation.

And he is desperately looking for at least a single success, which, even if Mariupol would fall by then, is already a humiliating battle too.

The massive numbers of soldiers who don’t want to fight for Putins war isn’t going down either, a mobilisation would only increase this issue too.

Only an idiot doesn’t know that it is the US and NATO attacking Russian territories and ships. Ukraine on it’s own cannot do this. There capability to do such attacks have seriously been degraded by weeks of systematic destruction of their land, air and see assets.

Since during the Cold war and up to the present times, US either directly or through weapon supply to Soviets or Russian adversaries have killed over 100,000 Russians. And this is not a secret. US even brags about it and don’t hide ill feelings and vile words towards Russia.

So, what will Russia do about all these. What Russia does best is what they are known to do – pretend that they don’t know who is attacking her. This weakness is very well known by US and that’s why the attacks will continue and be intensified deeper and deeper into Russian territory.

Russia, unfortunately disappoints and disappoints heavily. To the very least, Russia must let the gloves off and start attacking all vital infrastructures of Ukraine including government buildings, military schools, academies railway depots, vital roads etc. etc.

Over 300 billion dollars of their money has been frozen, part of which will now be used for Ukraine purposes. So the gloves should be off and make sure she achieved all her aims in Ukraine.

If they want to demilitarize and denazify, they better start being serious.
