For Africa it will be a painful and dangerous farewell to Europe and the West. Israel’s military moves in the Gaza Strip have achieved a first geopolitical objective: there is an ongoing shift in the North African and Muslim majority fault line. That fault distances the West from the Arab and African world, second after second. With Palestine in their hearts, the large African cities have taken to the streets to protest what is believed to be Israeli aggression in Gaza.
Even Tunisia, the moderate Tunisia, took to the streets with demonstrations that target not only Israel but also the Western community, totally aligned with Tel Aviv’s narrative. The Israeli-Palestinian crisis has put aside the institutional chaos that reigns supreme in Carthage. The Tunisian people look east, they look at the Palestinian people. And he takes to the streets against Israel, against France and against the West. In addition to the large rally organized in the center of Tunis, all the regions of the country, in particular Gafsa, Sfax, Msaken, Bizerte, Kairouan, Kef, Monastir, took to the streets to denounce an unprecedented war crime and ask for support for Palestine, denouncing the silence of the international community which they accuse of complicity with Israel.
From the squares in turmoil comes the request for the international community to firmly denounce the Israeli raid on the al-Ahli hospital in Gaza, where there are hundreds of deaths and other victims are still under the rubble, denouncing the atrocities that have targeted innocent women and children and remembering that these are serious violations of international humanitarian law.
The demonstrations targeted the French and American embassies: “The French and the Americans are the allies of the Zionists”, is the cry of the angry demonstrators in front of the French embassy. From the square comes the request to the president of the republic Saied to expel the French diplomats, with the accusation that France and the United States are the main “accomplices” of the crimes committed against the Palestinian people by the Israeli army.
The Tunisian Parliament also makes its voice heard. MPs are working on a bill that would ban the normalization of relations with Israel and have proposed financial aid to the Palestinian cause in addition to political and moral support.
The parliament met on October 16, in an extraordinary plenary session dedicated to the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories. The deputies proposed the creation of a parliamentary commission responsible for monitoring the decisions of the President of the Republic regarding support for the Palestinian cause.
We are looking for other avenues. A point considered fundamental is to stop the propaganda. Also under consideration by the Tunisian parliament is a law that provides for the establishment of an action plan for the Tunisian media aimed at countering the disinformation spread by foreign media and lifting the veil on the atrocities perpetrated by the Zionist war machine. Some parliamentarians have suggested broadcasting educational programs aimed at children to teach them about the Palestinian cause and Palestinian history. These programs would be broadcast on Earth Day and commemoration of the Nakba, the Palestinian defeat and exodus of 1947-1948.
For the president of parliament, Brahim Bouderbala, “a clear distinction must be made between Zionism and Judaism. We respect Jews who uphold the universal values upheld by all people.”
The French government is also in Bouderbala’s sights: the president of parliament has called for condemnation of the French position which bans pro-Palestinian demonstrations, expressing the hope that all countries that believe in justice and humanitarian values will adopt positions in favor of the just cause Palestinian.
Tunisian deputies also proposed boycotting Israeli products and those from “imperialist countries” as an act of resistance.
