The forces of the Islamist-led Syrian Transitional Government (STG) have committed a series of atrocities during their offensive against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northeast of the country, against both fighters of the group and civilians.

The large-scale offensive which began from the eastern countryside of the Aleppo governorate on January 13, continued even after the SDF accepted a merger agreement on January 18, with government forces and allied Arab tribes taking over most of the governorates of Raqqa, Deir Ezzor and even al-Hasakah, where Kurds are the majority.

Reports of violations, including possible war crimes, by government forces and tribal fighters began to surface from the very first day.

Dozens of people, both SDF fighters and civilians, were captured by STG forces. Several videos that surfaced online show them getting humiliated and beaten after being questioned about their identity, specifically if they were Kurds or members of the Alawite community.

Among those captured were also young Kurdish girls, and in one of the videos a government soldier is heard promising to “gift” two of them to someone called “Abu Mujahed”.

Other videos indicate that many of those captured were executed on the spot by STG forces. Some were shot from point blank. Others, however, were slaughtered.

In one case, government troops even took out the eyes and tongue of a middle-aged man in civilian clothes before executing him.

STG troops were also in other videos destroying the graves of SDF fighters who were killed while fighting ISIS years ago. The footage was reportedly taken at a graveyard in al-Hasakah.

The death toll from the offensive is still unknown, but it is believed to be in the hundreds with at least dozens of civilian casualties.

A new understanding to implement the merger agreement was announced on January 20, along with a four-day ceasefire in the northeast.

The government promised not to enter Kurdish cities. However, it is amassing its forces around al-Hasakah and al-Qamisli, as well as close to Kobani in the eastern Aleppo countryside. Several violations of the ceasefire have been already reported near these cities and towns, and tensions are high.

Fighting will likely resume, and with that more violations are expected. If STG storms Kurdish cities, large massacres against the Kurds are to be expected.

this is what trump wants. he wants all arabs like this. he wants all kurds like this. why? because he hates them, what color are they? are they white? are they zionist? there you are. this is part of attacking iran and lebanon. this is only first step. they should have seen this coming ever since they turned on the one who gave them sanctuary, assad. now they get no mercy from their ‘allies’…just as they did assad.
