Syrian government forces conducting an operation against ISIS cells in the central region have reportedly sustained their first losses.
On May 25, Syrian news sources reported that the terrorists had ambushed several units taking part in the operation in different parts of the central region. According to the sources, the ambushes resulted in some human and material losses.
So far, Syrian activists have identified only one casualty, Brigade General Nashwan Muhammad Saeed al-Saad of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
The SAA and its allies launched the large-scale operation in the central region on May 20. The operation is meant to secure vast parts of the region, from the eastern Homs countryside all the way to the eastern Hama countryside, the southern Aleppo countryside and the southern Raqqa countryside.
The army’s elite 25th Special Mission Forces Division, also known as the Tiger Forces, is leading the operation. The division’s renowned commander, Brigade General Suheil al-Hassan, is currently present in the central region.
The Russian Aerospace Forces have been supporting the operation by targeting ISIS’s personnel, equipment and hideouts throughout the central region.
ISIS is apparently trying to resist the SAA and its allies instead of hiding in remote parts of the central region as it did in the past. While this tactic may inflict some losses on government forces, it will for sure deplete the terrorist group’s cells in the region.
