Syrian government forces have taken advantage of the ongoing firece battle for Deir Ezzor city and opened a new front against ISIS terrorists.
According to pro-govenrment sources, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) advanced in the direction of Sarayim village southeast of the Doubayat gas field near the key town of Sukhna in the province of Homs.
The SAA and the NDF didn’t enter the village yet but a fighting was reported in its outskirts.
If govenrment forces are able to liberate the village, they will likely be able to conduct a large advance in order to take control over the Doubayat gas field and to secure the southern flank of Sukhna.
In turn, ISIS has little resources to counter the SAA advance in the area because the terrorist group has re-deployed large forces to Deir Ezzor.

With other words, SAA unleashed its reserves, which have been held back for eventual crisis situations. That too means they do not expect that Daesh would be able to field any further forces to throw SAA of balance around Deir Ezzor.

Question is, when SAA will address the North towards Ma’adan. So far I expect, that this is the next major operation, but we will see, it might be even that they go for the far east of Syria. But I highly doubt a move towards Al-Bukhama at the moment.
Nevertheless, this attack too aims at shortening the front line.
Methinks they leave Al-Bukhama until the Iraqis get their shit in order and finally start securing their border. They need to be good friends with the Iraqis, no need to antagonize them by sending every remaining ISIS rat into Iraq. Besides, the US and FSA are blocked off from advancing to Al-Bukhama in the south, it seems far more urgent to block the US and SDF off from advancing into East Syria
Yep, I had similar thoughts about this. But even the far east of Syria will push Daesh out to Iraq already. Even though it won’t be that many.
Hopefully Iraq and Syria will coordinate, but with the USa regaining influence, it is likely that they try to create a situation to upset Iraq against Syria. Already that Iraq didn’t decide to clear the border region, which would have been more than reasonable, is a sign for that.

Syria hasn’t released any of it’s reserves as they using current forces in shoring up defenses in and around Idlib and continue to manage various fronts, they have the reserves ready to be called up if they are needed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not meaning any reserves beyond Sukhna. They would arrive too late anyway around Deir Ezzor if something would happen. But combat reserves wich mostly are kept directly behind the front lines. to be poured in wherever it gets critical.
That Daesh is able to threaten the connection towards Deir Ezzor is not unexpected. No one expected an easy fight. It’s more about Daesh maybe pulling off some stunt, which would need immediate addressing. But, Daesh does not possess such reserves anymore.
As such, Idlib is a complete different story anyway, far away from the battle around Deir Ezzor. Those forces would be able to address any moves from Al-Qaeda (HTS). Slowly that area is heating up anyway.
