Governemnt forces have killed over 450 ISIS members and destroyed 5 battle tanks and 42 vehicles equipped with large-caliber machine guns during the operation near Deir Ezzor city, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
The Russian military group’s Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Alexander Lapin, said that the successful operation near Deir Ezzor allowed the Republican Guard assault force of General Zahreddine to unblock Deir Ezzor Airport where over 1,000 servicemen were surrounded for ten months.
“The Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Admiral Essen patrol ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet have destroyed militant command posts and communication hubs, which made it possible to disrupt the management of ISIL units in this area,” Lapin said.
The Russian general recalled that on September 5 Syrian troops under the command of General Suheil al-Hassan unblocked Deir Ezzor city that used to be besieged by ISIS for over 3 years and added that “at the moment the operation to liberate the city continues.” Government forces are working to defeat ISIS terrorists blocked in the neighborhoods of Deir Ezzor.
