Greater Idlib: Intense Artillery, Rocket Strikes Leave Three Militants Dead (Photos)

On June 6 and 7, intense artillery and rocket strikes by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies hit the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

The strikes targeted militants’ positions in the towns of Balyon, al-Bara, al-Fatterah, Falafel, Bayanin, Kansafra and Maratah in the southern countryside of Idlib as well as in the towns of Qilideen and al-Zyarah in northwestern Hama countryside.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes claimed the lives of three militants. Many others were wounded

Opposition activists shared photos showing the remains of what appears to be a guided projectile that was fired at Balyon. The projectile was not identified but it appears to be derivative from the 220 mm BM-27 Uragan or the 300 mm BM-30 Smerch rockets.

These strikes were most likely a response to the recent provocations by Greater Idlib militants. Last week, the militants launched an anti-aircraft missile. The target was reportedly a Russian Beriev A-50 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) plane.

The ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey last year, is still holding up. Nevertheless, the situation in the region is far from being stable or calm.
