Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is disarming moderate factions and occupying their positions in the region of Greater Idlib, Alexander Grinkevich, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, revealed on November 6.
In a press briefing, the commander warned that HTS and its allies may be planning to sabotage the Russian-Turkish agreement on the region, which was reached on March 5.
“Terrorists from HTS on the line of contact with government forces in the Jebel-Zawiya area in the south of Idlib province disarm moderate militants and occupy their positions,” Grinkevich said, “this may indicate that irreconcilable groups are planning to further aggravate the situation in order to disrupt the implementation of the Russian-Turkish agreements.”
Grinkevich revealed that 39 Syrian service members were killed and at least 40 others were wounded since October 1 in attacks launched by Greater Idlib militants.
The Russian commander also denied recent media reports, claiming that Russian forces and the Syrian military are shelling civilian settlements in Greater Idlib.
HTS and its allies have been violating the Russian-Turkish agreement on Greater Idlib for a while now. This may lead to a serious military escalation in the region soon. Turkey, which maintains a fairly large force in Greater Idlib, is yet to act against HTS to prevent such a scenario.

They should’ve also mentioned that Assad’s helping them do it, or is that what they meant when they said HTS and its allies, smirk.

Duhhh, as if no one’s realized that’s exactly what they’re doing, I’ve been saying it on the SF forums for more than 4 months now, and I’ve also been pointing out HTS hasn’t been attacking the SAA since the start of the year, so anyone reading my posts would know exactly what’s been happening. IT’S NO SECRET. Russia wants the moderate opposition [Muslim Brotherhood] to sit down and come to a political settlement with Assad, the Russians included them in the Astana agreements and they included them in resolution 2254, and then they told Assad he had to sit down and do a deal with them, and the biggest problem with that arrangement is the moderate opposition refuse to stop fighting. So the moderate opposition that Iran, Russia, and Turkey keep saying must be included in the reconciliation process, continually refuse to reconcile with the government, so are the Russians, Iranians, and Turks blind deaf and dumb to what’s happening, no they’re not, they’re just stubbornly trying to force this unholy arrangement on Assad, despite the fact it’s totally unworkable.
So what is HTS doing that upsets the Russians so much, lets see,
HTS has political control of more than 75% of the occupied territory in Latakia/Hama/Idlib/Aleppo, the Turkish backed Syrian Interim Government controls less than 25%, HTS have abandoned Jihad and want to become involved in the political process, HTS has declared the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda enemy combatants, HTS is upholding the ceasefire they’re not included in, HTS is arresting pro Syrian Interim Government soldiers/agents/politicians/activists, HTS is doing trade deals/prisoner swaps/opening border crossings with the Syrian Government,
So in other words HTS is doing everything the moderate opposition is supposed to be doing, and the moderate opposition are doing what HTS isn’t, so who’s actually behaving like the moderate opposition forces in Syria, it’s definitely not the people the Russians, Turks, and Iranians say it is. So who are the Syrian moderate opposition forces, and to who do the politicians who make up the Turkish/Russian/Iranian backed Syrian Interim Government owe their allegiances to, it’s not Turkey, Russia or Iran, it’s the Muslim Brotherhood, the very people both Assad and his father before him have continually said are the biggest threat to Syria, that’s who the moderate opposition forces are, Assad’s biggest enemies. And Russia, Iran, and Turkey are trying to force Assad to come to a political settlement with him, in fact the Muslim Brotherhood are sitting down with the Syrian Government RIGHT NOW rewriting the Syrian constitution, which Assad has continually said doesn’t need rewriting, poor Assad. The Russians placed the Muslim brotherhood on the terrorist list after the Chechen wars, they killed thousands of Russians in terrorist attacks and were rightfully placed on Russia’s international terrorist list [200 school children burned and bombed to death in one attack alone], but now Putin thinks it’s a good idea for them to share power with Assad and even possibly take over Syria in the next election [or possibly the one after]. So why’s he changed his attitude about the Muslim Brotherhood, he can see the deal he’s trying to broker with them isn’t working, and as I continually point out HTS is actually the better option if a political settlement is really what they’re all after, but no Turkey, Russia, and Iran all want the moderate opposition to be included in the political settlement, BUT WHY DO THEY. I can nearly understand Iran’s cooperation with the Muslim Brotherhood because they’ve been cooperating for years now, they no longer have any problem with each other, but Russia is the last country that should be cooperating with the Brotherhood, leave alone making them political partners in Syria, because in Libya they’re actually fighting the Brotherhood, and maybe in Armenia/Azerbaijan too soon. The Muslim Brotherhood hate Assad and all his fellow Alawites nearly as much as they hate the Jews, and they hate the Druze as well, so when they’re in power both these groups are in mortal peril, the Christians will also be suppressed, and within a decade Sharia law will be imposed on all of Syria except for the possible exception of the US controlled autonomous zone [if its still functional], so what is Syria going to be like if the Muslim Brotherhood take over, we’ll all find out if Russia, Turkey, and Iran get their way, but hopefully Assad gets his way and we don’t. Ditch Russia and Iran and embrace the Arab League, because as sickening as it sounds that’s the only way Assad will save Syria from Muslim Brotherhood oppression now, the war drums are sounding loud and clear, HTS has to go and the Muslim Brotherhood will take over, and not just from HTS, but from Assad as well, and then God help Syria and anyone in it that isn’t a mad Islamic Zealot. The Muslim Brotherhood call Alawites sub human, that’s a bad sign of things to come, no wonder Assad and his father hated the Brotherhood.
