On July 23, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out six airstrikes on militants’ positions in the outskirts of the town of al-Bara in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
A day earlier, three Russian airstrikes targeted al-Bara. An “observation post” of the Turkish military is located near the town.
Al-Bara is located in the al-Zawiya Mount, an area in the southern part of Greater Idlib where al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) maintains a strong presence.
A day earlier, protests were held near Turkish posts in the al-Zawiya Mount and other parts of Greater Idlib. The protesters demanded Turkey to put an end to government shelling by political or military means, while ignoring recent ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies. The protests were renewed on July 23.
The Russian airstrikes on al-Bara on July 22 and 23 were likely a response to the repeated ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies.
The ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey last year, is barely holding up. Nevertheless, it will not likely collapse anytime soon.
