On August 5, the Russian Aerospace Forces resumed its combat operations against militants in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

A series of Russian airstrikes targeted militants’ positions around the town of al-Bara in the southern Idlib countryside as well as in the surroundings of the town of Kabani in the northern countryside of Lattakia.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, maintains a strong presence in both towns.

The Russian airstrikes coincided with heavy artillery strikes by the Syrian Arab Army on militants’ positions in different parts of Grater Idlib.

Moreover, SAA snipers shot and killed two militants in the al-Zawiya Mount in the southern Idlib countryside. The slain militants were identified as Abu Musa’b Kawkaba from Idlib and Abu Abdulrahman Maldives from the Maldives. Both were special forces fighters in HTS’ Abu Baker al-Siddiq Brigade.

HTS and its allies violate the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey last year, on a daily basis.

The ceasefire in the region is barely holding up. Nevertheless, a large-scale confrontation between the SAA and the militants seems unlikely, at least as for the time being.
