A gunman attempted to attack the United State Embassy in Lebanon, on June 5, with local media reporting gunfire in the suburb of Awkar to the north of the capital, Beirut, where the diplomatic mission is based.
Lebanese soldiers shot the gunmen, the military said in a statement, describing him only as a Syrian national and noting that he was wounded and taken to a hospital.
The U.S. Embassy confirmed in a post to X on that “At 8:34 a.m. local time, small arms fire was reported in the vicinity of the entrance to the U.S. Embassy.”
The attack attempt did not cause any casualties among embassy staff, the post confirmed. The embassy thanked the Lebanese military, the country’s Internal Security Forces and the embassy security team.
“Investigations are now underway and we are in close contact with host country law enforcement,” the post concluded.
A photo of the wounded gunmen that surfaced online after the attack attempt showed what appears to be “ISIS” written on the military rig he was wearing, indicating that he may be a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terrorist group. However, this is yet to be confirmed by Lebanese authorities.
A deadly bombing attack on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut killed 63 people in 1983. U.S. officials blame the attack on Hezbollah. Following that attack, the embassy was moved from central Beirut to Awkar,. Another bomb attack struck the new location in 1984, with blame also directed against Hezbollah.
The latest attack attempt on the U.S. Embassy near Beirut came amid the Washington-backed Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 36,000 Palestinians. The war also sparked clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
