Gunmen Attack Syrian Army Checkpoint In Daraa

Fighter of the Khalid ibn al-Walid Army in western Daraa

In the early hours of February 1, unknown gunmen opened fire at a key checkpoint of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) around the town of Nahtah in the eastern Daraa countryside.

The unusual attack, which lasted for few minutes only, didn’t result in causalities, according to several Syrian pro-government and pro-opposition sources.

Following the incident, a joint force of the SAA and the Air Force Intelligence Directorate stormed Nahtah and arrested several suspects. However, it remains unclear if the real perpetrators were captured.

The SAA launched a large-scale attack on Nahtah last June. This forced local Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters to accept a reconciliation agreement. Since then, the strategic town had witnessed a state of calmness.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, the available information suggests that it was carried out by ISIS or even Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
