Hamas-led authorities in the Gaza Strip executed three men accused of collaborating with Israel, amid reports suggesting that emerging Palestinian opposition armed groups in the enclave have begun to receive more support from Israel.
A video of the execution surfaced online on September 21. It shows a masked man issuing a warning to “all collaborators” before the three men, kneeling and blindfolded, are kicked onto their fronts and shot in front of a crowd.
The execution reportedly took place in Gaza City, where the Israeli military is currently conducting a major offensive against Hamas.
A Palestinian security official from the Hamas-run Gaza government who spoke to Reuters said that the executions were carried out by the “Joint Operations Room of the Palestinian resistance”.
The videos showed “revolutionary rulings” being implemented against people for security collaboration with Israel, it said, adding that the execution was “a clear message and serve as a deterrent to anyone tempted to collaborate with the occupation”.
In the days leading to the execution several reports revealed that opposition to Hamas began to grow in southern Gaza with direct backing from Israel.
Yasser Abu Shabab, a trafficker who escaped from a Hamas jail during the war, announced that his group, the Popular Forces, has completed the training of another batch of fighters. The group first emerged in the eastern part of the area of Rafah in May of last year, and has since been accused of having links to ISIS and looting aid convoys.
In June, Abu Shabab, a Bedouin, released a recorded statement claiming to operate “under the legitimate Palestinian authority,” referring to the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly acknowledged in the same month that Israel was arming tribes that oppose Hamas, without providing any details.

The Popular Forces is not the only group opposed to Hamas that is currently operating in southern Gaza. A recent report by The Times of Israel revealed that a second group called the Strike Force Against Terror was formed in the town of Kizan al-Najjar close to the city of Khan Younis by former PA officer Hossam al-Astal.
“Whoever lives under Hamas’s oppression come to us,” al-Astal told the Israeli news outlet. “Dozens of families contact me every day.”
Just like Abu Shabab, al-Astal was imprisoned by Hamas in the past, with Palestinian media reports suggesting that he was charged with treason.
In The Times of Israel interview, al-Astal was very open about his relationship with Israel, whom he said was providing supplies to his group. He also said that the group’s military activities were supported by “the United States, Europe, and Arab states” that he refused to name.

A senior Abu Shabab lieutenant confirmed to The Times of Israel that the Popular Forces were coordinating with the Strike Force Against Terror.
“We are all one,” the commander said. Together, the groups are seeking to create a protective “belt” of control through Khan Younis and Rafah, in coordination with Israel, he claimed.
“They help us expand. The goal is the same – that people live under our protection, in agreement with our neighbors,” the commander added, referring to Israel.
The latest public execution suggests that Hamas is deeply worried about these emerging opposition groups in southern Gaza.
Israel could soon present these groups as a part of its plan for “the day after” for Gaza. The U.S., the European Unions, Arab states, the PA and even many in the Strip itself will likely see them as a better alternative to direct Israeli occupation. Nevertheless, in the long term, these groups will likely end up facilitating the complete occupation of the enclave, similar to what some would claim PA security forces have been doing in the occupied West Bank.

civilian leaders, or what steps it will take to hold those with command authority accountable.

(beirut) – the syrian transitional government promised accountability for violence that occurred in three governorates in march 2025, but provided little transparency on whether its investigation examined the role of senior military or civilian leaders, or what steps it would take to hold those with command authority accountable, human rights watch,
syrians for truth and justice, and the syrian archive said in a report released today.
the 51-page report, “‘are you alawite?’ identity-based targeting during syria’s transition,” documents widespread abuses by government forces, pro-government armed groups, and armed volunteers, including summary executions, deliberate destruction of property, and abuse of detainees. the findings show that these crimes occurred
as part of a centrally coordinated military operation overseen by the defense ministry, whose officials continued to coordinate the deployment of forces even after the mass killings became public knowledge.
“the government’s acknowledgment of the atrocities is a step forward, but it falls short of justice for the high-level officials who enabled or failed to stop these crimes,” said hiba zayadin, senior syria researcher at human rights watch.
“the failure to hold accountable commanders and officials who deployed or directed abusive forces opens the door to further reprisals and atrocities in syria.”
the violence erupted in march with a coordinated wave of attacks beginning on march 6 by gunmen the government described as loyal to the former regime of bashar al-assad. these attacks killed at least 200 members of the transitional government.
government forces responded with sweeping security sweeps across the region, committing widespread identity-based abuses and crimes, primarily targeting alawites, who are perceived as loyal to the former regime.
the report, based on more than 100 interviews with victims, witnesses, fighters, and journalists, as well as verified audiovisual material and satellite imagery, documented widespread abuses in more than two dozen towns, villages, and neighborhoods between
march 6 and at least march 10. these abuses included summary executions, house raids, looting, arson, and identity-based violations.
while the three organizations did not find direct orders to commit atrocities, they confirmed that the ministry of defense in the new government played a central role in mobilizing units and coordinating their deployment. authorities mobilized tens of thousands of fighters from across the country and assigned them to joint operational areas.
fighters said they received orders through ministry-linked channels to perform tasks that included handing over responsibility for areas deemed “safe” to the general security forces (police).
fighters told human rights watch that military leadership continued coordinating and deploying forces even after authorities knew, or should have known, about the killings and atrocities.
“a signed order is not necessary to hold senior officials and faction leaders accountable,” said bassam al-ahmad, co-founder and executive director of syrians for truth and justice. “defense ministry officials had the power to mobilize tens of thousands of fighters, determine and distribute geographical deployment areas, and sustain operations in dozens of towns for days. the question is not only who issued the orders, or whether they did, but why no one in charge was able to
stop the widespread killing and looting. this is a failure of leadership and a lack of will.”

a resident of the village of brabshbo in southern latakia said that she and her husband remained at home with their three children on march 8 after being assured by local officials and general security
forces that civilians who remained in their homes would not be harmed. that night, gunmen entered their home, asked if they were alawites, and when they learned they were, took her husband outside and shot him at the door. “they didn’t ask him about his work or anything,” she said. “they just shot him.”
