On November 21 morning, a gunman of the Palestinian Hamas Movement opened fire in Jerusalem’s Old City, killing one Israeli man and wounding four others.
Police officers at the scene opened fire at the gunmen, identified as 42-year-old Fadi Abu Shkhaydam from East Jerusalem, killing him on the spot.

According to the Israeli Police, Abu Shkhaydam entered the Old City armed with a Beretta M12 submachine gun and opened fire at three Israeli men who were walking through the area, near the Chain Gate entrance to the Temple Mount. The gunman fatally wounding one of the men, 27-year-old Eliyahu David Kay, and seriously injuring the other two.
Kay immigrated from South Africa, served in the IDF Paratroopers Brigade, and was working as a guide at the Western Wall until he was shot dead in the attack this morning.

The Israeli Police added that two police officers, aged 30 and 31, were lightly wounded in the fire exchange, most likely by shrapnel.
In a statement, Hamas hailed the attack, calling Abu Shkaydam a heroic martyr and describing him as a local leader of the movement.
“The message of the heroic operation is a warning to the criminal enemy and its government to stop the attacks on our land and our holy sites. [Israel] will pay a price for the iniquities it commits against Al-Aqsa Mosque, Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah and elsewhere,” the group’s statement reads.
Following the deadly shooting, the Israeli Police closed the Temple Mount to visitors likely to prevent any follow-up attack.
Only four days ago, a pair of Israeli border guards were lightly wounded in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem’s Old City. The Palestinian teenager who carried out the attack was shot and killed.
The new attack will lead to more tensions in Jerusalem and the Western Bank. Any harsh response by Israeli security forces could result in a new wave of Palestinian protests.
