Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas Movement both launched attacks against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from southern Lebanon on February 28.

In the morning, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced that it had fired 40 Grad rockets from southern Lebanon at the headquarters of the IDF’s 769th Hiram Division in the settlement of Kiryat Shmona and the so-called Airport Barracks near the settlement of Beit Hilal.

The rocket attack was carried out in response to Israeli “massacres” against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as well as to the assassination of Hamas commanders, including the Movement’s deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri, in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, last month, the group said in a statement.

The IDF said that only some 15 rockets crossed the border, one of which hit a home in Kiryat Shmona. While the IDF said that the attack didn’t result in any casualties, Hebrew media reported that two wounded were evacuated by a helicopter to hospitals in the northern city of Haifa.

In response to the attack, the IDF said it destroyed the launcher used to fire the rockets and struck several positions of Hezbollah sites in the southern Lebanese towns of Ibl al-Saqi, Bint Jbeil and Yaroun.

Later in the afternoon, Hezbollah announced that its fighters targeted a gathering of Israeli troops at the Birkat Risha site and shelled the sites of Ramtha and Al-Sammaqa.

The attacks were carried out “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance,” according to three separate statements released by the group.

The IDF responded by carrying out strikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, including a cell of fighters in the town of Ayta al-Shaab.

Targets hit by Israeli fighter jets also included buildings and other infrastructure used by Hezbollah in the towns of Taybeh, Beit Lif, Seddiqine and Khirbet Selm, according to the IDF.

Lebanese media didn’t report any civilian casualties and neither Hezbollah or Hamas announced the death of any of their fighters.

Hezbollah and its allies, including Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions, have been launching attacks from southern Lebanon against the IDF since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

So far, the clashes on the border have resulted in six civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least ten IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 300 people have been killed, including 206 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 40 civilians.
