The Hamas Movement and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad continue to put on serious resistance in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) prepares to mount an unprecedented offensive on the heart of the enclave.
The two factions shared between August 14 and 17 several videos documenting some of their recent operations against the IDF.
The first video shared by Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, shows the group’s fighters clashing with Israeli troops from close range in the outskirts of Gaza City in the northern part of the Strip. The second video shows similar clashes from the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
In both videos, Hamas fighters target Israeli troops with sniper rifles, blow up main battle tanks, armored personnel vehicles and armored bulldozers with rocket propelled grenades and shelling gatherings of the IDF with mortars.
Two other videos shared by the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad, showed the aftermath of an attack with explosive devices on IDF vehicles, including tanks, near the city of Gaza, and a mortar attack from the same direction.
The IDF, which is said to be controlling around 75% of Gaza, is currently preparing to expel Palestinians from Gaza City. The step is a part of a plan for a new offensive aimed to completely capture the city, although some of the remaining 50 Israeli hostages are believed to be held there.
The Israeli war on Gaza has so far claimed the lives of more than 60,000 Palestinians. Most of the Strip, where over two million live, has also been destroyed.
The offensive in Gaza City, which was not fully invaded by Israeli troops before, is expected to be particularly harming to the humanitarian situation in the Strip.
The Israeli government apparently believes that the offensive will break the back of Hamas and force it to surrender, or at least to accept a more favorable ceasefire-hostage deal. However, the group and its allies, including the Islamic Jihad, appear to be determined to fight to the end.
