Israel’s Shin Bet security agency announced September 3 that it had dismantled a cell of the Hamas Movement from the occupied West Bank that allegedly planned to assassinate National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir using explosive-laden drones.
The cell purchased several drones, intending to equip them with explosives to carry out the attack, according to the security agency, which said that the drones were confiscated during the arrests.
Ben-Gvir leads Otzma Yehudit, or “Jewish Power,” a far-right, Kahanist, anti-Arab party. He has served as Israel’s Minister of National Security since 2022, with a brief resignation in January 2025 over a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, returning later in March.
Investigations by the Shin Bet indicate the assassination plot was directed by leaders of Hamas based in Turkey. There has been no comment from Ankara.
A spokesperson for the security agency said that the agency “will continue working to thwart any attempt by Hamas to carry out terror operations against Israel and its citizens, and will ensure all perpetrators are held accountable.”
A photo released by the Shin Bet revealed that two drones were seized from the cell, a DJI Mavic and DJI FPV. Both drones are commercially available. It is very likely that the cell planned to use the Mavic as for surveillance and the FPV, which as its names suggest features a first-person view control mode, for the actual attack.
Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, has successfully deployed such FPV drones against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in Gaza. This is the first time, however, an attempt to use drones in such an attack has been documented in the West Bank.
If true, the plot shows that Hamas is not just still willing to fight in Gaza, but also creatively planning new attacks in the West Bank and possibly even in Israel.
The Shin Bet announcement came at a convenient time for the IDF, which is preparing to embark on a large-scale offensive targeting Gaza City.
On September 2, the military called up tens of thousands of reservists for the offensive in Gaza and stepped up its strikes on the Strip.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir told troops that the Gaza City offensive was already moving forward, and that it would not accept anything less than the complete defeat of Hamas.
“We will not stop the war until we defeat this enemy,” Zamir said during a visit to central Israel’s Nachshonim base, where he spoke with newly mobilized reservists and personnel from the Technological and Logistics Directorate.
“Hamas will have no place to hide from us. Wherever we locate them, whether they are senior or junior figures – we strike them all, all the time,” he said. “We have already begun the Gaza maneuver. We are already entering places we have never entered before and operating there with courage, strength, valor, and an extraordinary spirit.”
Separately, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video address to the reservists that Israel was “moving toward total victory.”
“What began in Gaza must end in Gaza,” he said. “Now we stand before the decisive stage. I believe in you, I trust you, and the entire nation embraces you.”
Also on September 2, Gaza’s Health Ministry said 13 people, including three children, died from starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours. During the same period, at least 105 Palestinians were killed by IDF fire across Gaza, including 53 in Gaza City, medical sources told Al Jazeera.
In one reported strike, an Israeli drone struck a water distribution point in al-Mawasi in southern Gaza, where, according to local media. At least 11 people were killed there, including seven children.
The death toll from the Israeli war on Gaza has already exceeded 63,500, with women and children making up the majority of the victims.
Despite ongoing efforts by Qatar and others to broker a new ceasefire-hostage deal, Israel will likely launch its large-scale offensive on Gaza City. The assasination plot against Ben-Gvir will be used as another pretext, not just to prolong the war in the Strip, but also to crackdown even harder on Palestinians in the West Bank.
