Arab media reports from October 5 suggest that Hamas is planning to fully comply with the peace plan presented by United States President Donald to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, including disarming and leaving the enclave.
Sources from Hamas told the Saudi-owned news channel Al-Hadath that the group’s fighters in Gaza have begun collecting the bodies of the dead hostages across the Strip, and that they had asked Israel to halt its aerial strikes so that they are able to complete the task.
At least 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with 22 believed alive and 26 confirmed dead, according to Israel. According to Al-Hadath , the transfer of the bodies will take some time, and there is flexibility from the U.S. on this matter.
The report also said that Hamas has received guarantees from the Trump administration stipulating that Israel will not resume the war and will permanently withdraw the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from the strip if the plan proceeds to its conclusion.
In addition, the sources told Al-Hadath that Hamas has agreed to hand over its weapons to a Palestinian–Egyptian body under international supervision. They added that it had been agreed that Hamas leaders can choose to leave Gaza if they so wish and will not be targeted by Israel.
Unsurprisingly, Al-Hadath report was denied by Hamas. This, of course, could lead to a serious escalation by Israel, as disarmament is a key part of Trump’s plan.
“Some platforms and media sites are circulating claims attributed to a source in the Hamas movement to Al-Hadath channel stating that the movement agreed to gradually hand over weapons under international supervision. We confirm that these news are false and baseless.
We confirm on Tabbin channel that official statements and declarations are published through the official website of the Hamas movement and the official Telegram channel.
We also call on the media to verify accuracy from the official Hamas movement website through the official page link address of the movement,” the group said in a statement.
The peace plan, announced by Trump on September 29, demands an immediate ceasefire, hostage release within 72 hours, and Hamas’s disarmament, with Israel withdrawing on several stages and Palestinian technocrats taking over under international oversight for up to five years. On October 3, Trump said that Hamas had accepted the plan.
Maintaining pressure on Hamas, Trump warned the group on October 5 that it could face “complete obliteration!” if it tries to cling to power in Gaza.
Asked by CNN about those who say Hamas effectively rejected his plan by refusing to accept disarmament and setting conditions for a hostage release, Trump writes, “We will find out. Only time will tell!!!”
The IDF halted its major offensive in Gaza City on October 4, but y continued to carry out strikes against targets it deemed to pose a threat, including in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood, in which at least 18 Palestinians were reported killed, including children.
Later in the day, the Hamas-run health ministry said that Israeli bombardment had killed at least 57 people since dawn all over the Strip.
In addition to the deadly strikes, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir told commanders in Gaza on October 5 that they must be prepared to resume fighting at any time.
“There is no ceasefire, but there is a change in the operational situation, the political echelon is taking the tools and achievements you have brought through military action and translating them into a political achievement,” Zamir said during a tour of the westernmost point of the Netzarim Corridor, south of Gaza City.
“If the political effort does not succeed, we will return to fight,” he added, according to remarks provided by the IDF.
Hamas has already made major concessions, including accepting the release of all remaining hostages. Meanwhile, Israel appears to be stalling when it comes to withdrawing from Gaza as evident by its recent strikes. With or without a full Israeli withdrawal, Hamas will not likely agree to disarm. This shows that Trump’s peace plan is set to face major issues.
