The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, announced on February 9 that it has damaged or destroyed 1,108 vehicles of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) using locally-made Al-Yassin 105 rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Yassin 105 is basically a copy of the Soviet-made RPG-7. Al-Qassam revealed in a report on its official website that the RPG first entered service in 2018, following three years of development.
The RPG was developed in two versions, one identical to the PG-7VR with its tandem charge high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead -which can penetrate 600 mm of rolled homogeneous armor with reactive elements- and another comparable to the TBG-7V with its thermobaric warhead but with an initial smaller HEAT charge.
Al-Qassam claims that the tandem HEAT version of Al-Yassin 105 can penetrate between 600-1,000 mm of armor, which means it is more effective than the PG-7VR.
The range of the RPG, which was first used during the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, is thought to be around 500 meters, roughly the same as original Soviet RPG-7 rounds.
Al-Qassam said that the Al-Yassin 105 was especially developed to defeat the IDF’s most advanced vehicles, like the Merkava 4 main battle tank, the Namer armored personnel carrier and up-armored D9 bulldozers. While each of these vehicles cost several millions of dollars, a single Al-Yassin 105 RPG cost only $500.
Using Al-Yassin 105 RPGs, Palestinian fighters have damaged or destroyed 962 tanks, 55 armored personnel carriers, 74 bulldozers, three excavators and 14 high-mobility vehicles of the IDF since the start of the war in Gaza, according to al-Qassam.
These numbers are likely accurate. Al-Qassam has already released dozens of videos showing successful attacks with Al-Yassin 105 RPGs against IDF vehicles.
Hamas’ ability to develop and manufacture Al-Yassin 105 RPGs under strict Israeli siege on Gaza goes to show the high competence of its armed wing. It also highlights the difficulty of Israel’s stated goal of completely destroying the group and its allies.
