The Palestinian Hamas Movement announced on October 29 that its fighters were clashing with Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the northern Gaza Strip.
In a statement, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said that the clashes were taking place near the city of Beit Lahia.
“Al-Qassam Mujahideen continue to confront Zionist forces penetrating the al-Amiriyya area northwest of Beit Lahia, where they engaged in armed clashes with them, targeted enemy vehicles with al-Yassin 105 tandem [rocket-propelled] grenades and mortar shells, and carried out several sniping operations,” the statement reads.
The statement noted that the Israelis had admitted a number of casualties, in an apparent reference to an earlier statement by the IDF which said that an officer was seriously hurt by a mortar impact and separately a soldier was moderately hurt during clashes in northern Gaza overnight.
In a later statement, al-Qassam said that its fighters surprised advancing Israeli troops by “sneaking behind them” and targeting them from a close range.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second largest faction in Gaza, said that its military wing, the al-Quds Brigade, shelled Israeli troops in the northern part of the Strip with heavy rockets and mortar shells.
Other rocket attacks hit Israeli settlements near Gaza. A salvo of rockets also targeted a number of towns and cities in central Israel, including Tel Aviv, Herzliya, Ra’anana, Holon and Hod Hasharon. No casualties were reported, however.
From its side, the IDF said that during recent ground operations in the Gaza Strip, its troops killed a number of Hamas fighters who opened fire and others identified on the coast. The troops also struck anti-tank guided missile positions, observation posts and other Hamas infrastructure. In addition, they directed the Israeli Air Force to carry out strikes against buildings used by Hamas.
In the morning, the IDF said that it had increased the number of troops on the ground as part of its expanded operation in Gaza. It also announced that the death toll among its ranks since the October 7 Hamas-led surprise attack has risen to 311 with 32 others confirmed to be hostages in the Strip.
According to a report by The New York Times, Israel made the decision to hold off on a full-scale invasion of Gaza and instead conduct more limited ground incursions, at least for the time being. This decision aligns with suggestions that the United States Defense Secretary, Lloyd J. Austin III, made to his Israeli counterparts in recent days.
