On January 4, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released video footage documenting recent clashes with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the northern Gaza Strip.
The footage shows Hamas fighters damaging several Israeli main battle tanks with rocket-propelled grenades, shelling a large gathering of equipment and targeting an infantry force of the IDF with assault rifles and explosive devices in Gaza City.
The IDF claims that most of Gaza City is under its control. However, the video released by the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades indicates this is not true.
The IDF made very limited gains in central and southern Gaza in recent days. On January 5, it reported that more than 100 strikes had hit targets of Hamas in the Strip.
The strikes, carried out by air, sea, and ground forces, hit Hamas command centers, launch positions, weapons depots and other infrastructure, according to the IDF.
In central Gaza’s al-Bureij refugee camp, the IDF said that troops from the Border Defense Corps’ 414th Combat Intelligence Collection Unit spotted a group of Hamas fighters attempting to attack an IDF tank. The troops launched a pursuit after the fighters using a drone, and the IDF called in an airstrike after the fighters were spotted fleeing into a building.
In southern Gaza’s Khan Younis city, reservists of the Kiryati Brigade found several rocket launch sites used to fire projectiles at Israel. The IDF said that the troops destroyed the launchers and killed “many” Hamas fighters during several battles in the area.
Recent Israeli strikes on Gaza led to more casualties. In its latest update, the Hamas-run health ministry in the Strip said that the death toll from Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip had risen to 22,438. At least 70% were women and children. More than 57,614 others have been wounded.
Talks on a new temporary ceasefire in Gaza faced a major setback after the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri, deputy leader of Hamas, in Lebanon earlier this week. Now, the IDF appears to be expanding its operations in different parts of the Strip.
