The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released on September 21 a video showing an unmanned American-made M113 armored personnel carrier (ACP) of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) that was recently captured by its fighters to the east of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
The unmanned APC was not armed with any weapon. However, it was rigged with loads of explosives, which were apparently taken by Hamas fighters.
The same video shows several small commercial quadcopter drones which were also downed and seized by Hamas fighters near Rafah recently.
The IDF began using unmanned M113 APCs in Gaza earlier this year, with some armed with heavy machine guns and others rigged with up to four tons of explosives. These APCs were used to lure out and target fighters hiding in dense urban areas in the Strip. This tactic didn’t work out very well however, as many of the vehicles were destroyed.
On the other hand, the IDF has been heavly using small commercial quadcopter drones since the beginning of the war on Gaza.
These drones are being used to monitor urban areas as well as to scan buildings and tunnels. Some were modified to carry small munitions, smoke grenades, machine guns or even speakers for psychological operations.
The IDF reliance on unmanned systems in Gaza helped curb its human losses. However, Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip have already adapted to this threat. Some of these systems are even being seized then reused against Israeli troops.
