Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham Attacks New Army Positions In Southern Idlib With Heavy SVBIED (Photos)

A suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) struck late on August 16 the town of Madayah in southern Idlib, which was recently captured by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

Muraselon, a pro-government outlet, claimed that Syrian soldiers were able to destroy the SVBIED before it could reach their positions. However, photos released by HTS’ news agency, Iba’a, confirm that the SVBIED exploded in the heart of Madayah.

The losses sustained by the SAA as a result of the attack remain unclear. No Syrian troops or military equipment of the army can be spotted in the photos.

SAA units imposed control of Madayah a day earlier only. Madayah is located northwest of the key town of Khan Shaykhun, one of the main targets of the current army offensive.

Earlier this month, HTS began relying on SVBIEDs in what seems to be a desperate attempt to stop the army’s advance in southern Idlib. ISIS had followed a similar strategy to no avail.
