In a new violation of the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) shelled several positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) west and southwest of the city of Aleppo on February 28.
The radical group’s news agency, Iba’a, released several photos showing HTS fighters launching 107mm rockets and 120mm mortars at the army’s positions.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the SAA responded to these new violations by shelling several positions of HTS and its close ally, Jaysh al-Izza, in the towns of Arbain, Zaka, Hisraiyah and Tell Sakar in the northern Hama countryside.
“The army’s strikes killed a number of terrorists and injured others … Several fortifications and hideouts, which were used by the terrorists to launch attacks on army positions and safe areas, were also destroyed,” the SANA’s reporter in Hama said.
In the last three weeks, militants stepped up their attacks on the residential areas in the government-held parts of Lattakia, Hama, Idlib and Aleppo. At least two civilians were killed as a result of these attacks.
A recent report by a pro-opposition TV claimed that Turkey is planning to establish new observation posts in order to reinforce the demilitarized zone agreement. However, local observers doubt that any of these efforts will success.
