Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has executed Abu Moaz al-Jazayirii al-Asimi, a former high-ranking commander of ISIS, the Step News Agency reported on June 9.
According to the pro-opposition news outlet, al-Asimi was executed earlier this month in an unspecified location in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
The Algerian terrorist was a former senior religious official in ISIS. Al-Asimi led a “mutiny” in northern Aleppo and southern Deir Ezzor, after claiming that many of the group’s leaders, including Abu Baker al-Baghdadi, were Kufar [infidels].
On July 27 of 2016, ISIS issued an official order to kill or capture al-Asimi. Soon after, he was captured by the terrorist group. However, al-Asimi escaped to Turkey when the U.S.-led coalition bombed the prison in which he was being held in. Later, he moved from Turkey to Idlib.
HTS’ security forces reportedly apprehended al-Asimi a few months ago. He was first jailed in the al-Uqab prison. Then he was moved to prisons in Sarmada and Haram. The terrorist spent his last days in the al-Zanbaqah prison.
In the last two years, HTS executed dozens of ISIS fighters and commanders, who were captured by its security forces in Greater Idlib.
Despite the lack of any significant ideological differences between the two groups, HTS views ISIS as a serious threat to its influence in Greater Idlib. The struggle between the two groups has always been about power.
