On Thursday, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) recaptured al-Sukkari, Abu Kahf, Abul Gor and Hasnaoui villages in the northeastern Hama countryside from ISIS, according to the HTS-linked news agency Iba’a. HTS unts allegedly killed several ISIS fighters and captured two tanks during their counter-attack.

Iba’a also reported that HTS fighters destroyed a truck of ISIS that was carrying 8 ISIS fighters with an ATGM around al-Shakusiyah town.

Meanwhile in southern Syria, several Free Syrian Army (FSA) groups launched a new attack against the ISIS-affiliated Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Waleed in the western Daraa countryside, according to Syrian opposition sources. However, no clashes have been reported from there so far.

Meanwhile, a report of the Syrian opposition news website Enab Baladi revealed that HTS refused to participate in the attack against Jaysh Khalid ibn al-Waleed.

According to the report, HTS officials told FSA groups that they are preparing for a more important battle. HTS is likely planning to launch yet another attack against the Syrian Arab Army in Daraa city or even in Quneitra governorate.

The HTS decision proves that the group is not interested in fighting ISIS for real .The ongoing counter-attack of HTS in the northern Hama countryside is just a defensive operation that HTS was forced to launch after ISIS fighters killed and captured many of its fighters during their attack.

Who is surprised to learn that IS and HTS are not really enemies?

They have the same aims and strategy, only differ in tactics. Groups of fighters have been switching from one to the other in the past.

While it has been known for closely similar groups to be mutually very hostile, in the face of the near collapse of IS, cooperation seems likely and is unsurprising.
