Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) announced on March 13 that an agreement to de-escalate tensions in the town of Saramada in northern Idlib had been reached.
The tensions erupted a day earlier when HTS security personnel insulted and assaulted an elderly man from Saramada simply because he hit their checkpoint with his car by accident. This move angered local fighters that launched an attack on the terrorist group’s positions around the town.
HTS’ didn’t back down and deployed large reinforcements around Saramada. 300 terrorists of the group stormed the town late on March 12, injuring at least one local fighter.

After imposing control of Saramada and besieging the remaining local fighters in a narrow area, HTS reached “the agreement” with the town’s locals.
Under the agreement, weapons will be withdrawn from the town and an investigation will be launched into the recent developments. Several Turkish-backed fighters who supported the locals will be expelled to northern Aleppo.
There were similar incidents between HTS and Greater Idlib locals last year. The terrorist group takes advantage of these incidents to terrorize locals and impose own will on them. Such incidents usually occur when HTS losses major battles against the Syrian Arab Army.
