On April 15, opposition activists shared a video showing militants threatening to behead Turkish soldiers deployed in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
The video shows three militants mocking Turkish soldiers that withdraw from a post in the region. A few seconds into the video, the militants, who were standing a few meters away from the soldiers, threaten to behead them and pin their heads on the nearby earth barrier.
“God willing, we will place your heads here,” one of the militants, called Abu Basir, says as he points at a nearby earth barrier, “we will cut one of your heads and place it here, on the edge of the barrier.”
Opposition activists confirmed that the militants in the video are fighting in the ranks of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The terrorist group is yet to comment on the video.
Earlier this year, Turkey provided HTS and several other groups in Greater Idlib with weapons and air support to fend off an attack by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.
The video is another evidence showing the real, radical ideology of HTS, which is clearly using Turkey to protect its last strongholds in Syria. Ankara has a limited influence over the terrorist group, which is now working to sabotage the Russian-Turkish de-escalation agreement on Greater Idlib.
