Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) fighters have repelled a new attack by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) on their positions south of the town of Kabani in northern Lattakia, the terrorist group’s news network, Iba’a, reported on the afternoon of May 25.
Iba’a didn’t provide additional information on the supposed attack. However, sources close to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP), which is also deployed in northern Lattakia, claimed that several Syrian service members were killed and injured in the advance attempt.
The 4th Division is leading the military operation in northern Lattakia, which is aimed at capturing Kabani. Terrorists are launching rockets from the strategic town at the Russian Hmeimim airbase on a regular basis.
Pro-government sources have not confirmed or denied HTS and the TIP claims, so far. However, warplanes of the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) carried out a series of airstrikes on terrorists’ positions near Kabani, which indicate that an attack was indeed ongoing.
In the last few weeks, the SAA captured several positions south of Kabani. However, it failed to impose its control of key hilltops, likely due to the region’s rough terrain.
SAA should not butcher their forces on HTS in Latakia. Just wait for Tiger forces.
Maybe even better to advance around the mountain and town and cut it off, isolate it. Once they are out of ammo, the town will fall.
Trouble is this chain of heights overlooks the areas around it. This rough and forested terrain is excellent for the defender. I always felt that SAA should not attack it unless they must have it. I doubt that SAA has a trained mountain unit, there was a report that some Tigers have been sent there. Waiting for what ? Syria-Hezbolah-Iran-RUssia ground troops were deployed more than 6 month ago there. It looks like there is a lack of coordination and support of Russia air forces.
