The meeting of the head of the US CIA William Burns and the head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergei Naryshkin on the possible use of nuclear weapons took place in November 2022 in Istanbul, but it turned out that the counterparts evaluated its results differently.
In his interview with CBS News, CIA Director Bill Burns claimed that the meeting was “pretty dispiriting.”
“There was a very defiant attitude on the part of Mr. Naryshkin as well. A sense of cockiness and hubris,” Burns said. “A sense, I think, reflecting Putin’s own view, his own belief today, that he can make time work for him, that he believes he can grind down the Ukrainians, that he can wear down our European allies, that political fatigue will eventually set in.”
The arrogant claim of Mr Burns was not left unanswered by his Russian counterpart.
Director of the Russian SVR Sergei Naryshkin, commented on the issue explaining that the conversation lasted more than 2.5 hours took place in a comfortable atmosphere and was informative.
“And that alone suggests that the meeting could hardly last for so long if one of the parties behaved boldly, rudely, arrogantly,” the head of the SVR told reporters.
Naryshkin added that he respects Burns “both as a very experienced, skilled diplomat, and as his colleague, who may not have very much experience as director of the Central Intelligence Agency yet.”
In mid-January, Moscow also made it clear that it was open for talks with the US CIA. Mr Naryshkin then claimed that he did not rule out that he could talk to Burns again, calling the previous conversation “meaningful”. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later said that the talks in Istanbul “played a key role in preventing “uncontrolled escalation,”
Burn’s claims were nothing but another media provocation against Russia and Russian top officials made in an attempt to assure the Western public of the allegedly “evil essence of Russian elite”. In fact, such an image is nothing but a fairytale created by the Western propaganda in order to support the bellicose policy of the NATO countries themselves.
