Hezbollah on April 21 announced that it had carried out an attack against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in response to ceasefire violations in the first such development.

In a statement, the group said that it targeted an artillery position in the northern Israeli settlement of Kfar Giladi with a rocket barrage and suicide drones.

Hezbollah claimed to have documented over 200 Israeli violations of the United States-brokered ten-day ceasefire since it took effect on April 17. It noted that the attack against the IDF was carried out in response to those violations, which included the destruction of civilian properties, and within its “right to resist occupation and repel it.”

The group mentioned recent Israeli artillery strikes on the town of Yahmar al-Shaqif in southern Lebanon. white phosphorus shells were reportedly used.

Earlier, the IDF said that Hezbollah violated the ceasefire by firing several rockets at Israeli troops stationed in southern Lebanon, as well as launching a drone at Israel.

According to the military, the group fired several rockets toward troops stationed in the Rab al-Thalathine area, within the Israeli-occupied security zone. Within a few minutes, Israeli strikes hit the launcher used in the attack.

Separately, the IDF said that the sirens that sounded in the settlement of Kfar Yuval and Ma’ayan Baruch on the Lebanon border were not false alarms as initially reported. Following an examination, the military said that the alerts were triggered in the northern settlements due to the interception of a drone that was launched from Lebanon. The drone was shot down before crossing the border, according to the military.

The IDF described Hezbollah attacks as “blatant violations of the ceasefire agreement,” which is set to end in just five days.

Hezbollah’s attacks shows that the group is not willing to tolerate Israeli violations unlike in the previous ceasefire, which was also brokered by the U.S.

The escalation came ahead of a second round of ambassador-level peace talks between Israel and Lebanon set to be held in the U.S. later in the week.
