Hezbollah continues to launch heavy rocket attacks deep into northern Israel in response to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) ongoing aerial campaign against Lebanon.
In three separate statements, Hezbollah said that it had launched two barrages of rockets at the settlement of Kiryat Motzkin and another salvo at an explosives factory in the Zichron area. Hebrew media reported interceptions over both areas, but no losses.
The group announced in another statement that its air defense opened fire at two Israeli fighter jets over the towns of Hula and Mays al-Jabal, forcing them to withdraw.
From its side, the IDF said that it had struck 280 targets of Hezbollah across Lebanon since the morning. According to separate statements by the military, the targets included fighters, dozens of weapon depots, surveillance equipment, command rooms and primed rocket launchers.
The Lebanese Health Ministry said that the recent strikes claimed the lives of at least 51 people and left more than 223 others wounded.
Separately, the IDF announced that it was calling up two reserve brigades to be deployed to the northern front of the country.
The military said in a statement that the move, made following a fresh assessment, “will allow the continuation of the fighting effort against the Hezbollah terror organization, the protection of the citizens of the State of Israel, and the creation of the conditions for the safe return of the [displaced] residents of the north to their homes.”
The confrontation between Israel and Lebanon broke out after the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip last October, with Hezbollah and its allies launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Palestinian enclave.
The IDF escalated its strikes against Lebanon with the start of the week to a level not seen since the war of 2006. So far, the aerial campaign has claimed the lives of more than 600 people, including dozens of women and children.
Overall, Israel appears to be preparing to launch a ground invasion into Lebanon to fulfill its declared aim of pushing Hezbollah away from the front.
