Hezbollah attacked on April 23 two key bases of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) with drones in response to the assassination of two of its fighters.
A number of suicide drones were launched at the headquarters of the 1st “Golani” Brigade and the Unit 621, also known as Sayeret Egoz, in the Shraga Barracks near the northern Israeli city of Acre, the group said in a statement, noting that it used other drones as a decoys during the attack.
Suspected drone infiltration sirens sounded in Acre as well as in the nearby towns and cities. The IDF later said that three “suspicious aerial targets” -believed to be suicide drones- were successfully intercepted by air defenses over the sea, one off the coast of Nahariya and two near Acre. However, video footage showed at least one impact in Acre. There were no reports of casualties.
The drone attack was one of the deepest launched by Hezbollah during the ongoing confrontation with Israel which broke out on the backdrop of the war in the Gaza Strip.
Hezbollah said that the drone attack was carried out in support of the Palestinian people and resistance in Gaza as well as in response to the assassination of one of its fighters.
Earlier in the day, an Israeli drone strike on the southern Lebanese town of Aadloun killed Hussein Azqul, who the IDF said was a “central terrorist” in Hezbollah’s air defense unit.
Azqul, according to the IDF, was “heavily involved in the activities of the [air defense unit] and took part in the planning and execution of a variety of terror activities.” The military added that his death was a “significant blow” to Hezbollah’s air defense unit.
Another overnight Israeli strike on southern Lebanon claimed the life of Muhammad Attiya, who the IDF said was a member of the aerial unit of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force. Attiya was “involved in the preparation and execution of terrorist attacks” against Israel, the military said.
Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of both Azqul and Attiya, saying in separate statements that they were killed “on the road to Jerusalem,” a phrase used to refer to those killed by the IDF in the ongoing confrontation.
The two assassinations were apparently Israel’s response to the downing of a Hermes 450 combat drone by Hezbollah over Lebanon on April 21.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in Gaza last October, with Hezbollah and its allies carrying out attacks in support of the Strip. The border clashes gained momentum in the last few weeks. Nevertheless, a serious escalation remains unlikely.
So far, the clashes have resulted in eight civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 11 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 269 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 70 civilians.
