Lebanon’s Hezbollah has deployed an Iranian-made air defense system near the Syrian capital, Damascus, Zaman Alwsl reported on January 6.
The Syrian pro-opposition news outlet said that the air defense system was deployed at a position of Hezbollah near the town of Rakhlah on the border line with Lebanon, some 30 kilometers to the west of Damascus.
The unidentified air defense system was allegedly brought in all the way from the governorate of Deir Ezzor in the eastern region of Syria.
“The system was deployed and activated, under the supervision of an air defense expert of the Lebanese national who works for Hezbollah,” a reporter of Zaman Alwsl said.
According to Zaman Alwsl, Hezbollah has been working to expand and fortify its positions in the outskirts of Rakhlah for a while now.
The report came just four days after a series of Israeli strikes that targeted Damascus International Airport. Six Syrian soldiers were killed and two others were wounded in the strikes, which were reportedly carried out to prevent the delivery of Iranian-made weapons to Hezbollah via the airport.
Hezbollah do possess some air defense capabilities. Nevertheless, the group didn’t deploy any air defense systems in Syria in the past, most likely because the country already has a well-built air defense network. This raises some serious questions about the claims made by Zaman Alwsl.
It’s worth noting that fake news about the movements of Hezbollah and other Iran-affiliated armed factions in Syria are usually used to justify Israeli attacks on the country.

I don’t think they would bother. If Syrian air defenses can’t do the job, why would theirs be able to? They need to and probably are focusing their air defense efforts in Lebanon, who virtually has none and where israeli aircraft continue to violate their airspace in order to fire long range missiles into Syria.
