Hezbollah destroyed on January 24 a series of tunnels in the Eastern Qalamun region on the Syrian-Lebanese border, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The London-based monitoring group said in a report that the tunnels were originally dug by militants, who likely used them to hide from government forces and move between Syria and Lebanon.
The tunnels destroyed by Hezbollah’s engineer units were located in the areas of Wadi al-Khail, al-Ayuini, al-Ma’ara and Tell Musa.
In 2014, the Syrian part of the Eastern Qalamun region was cleared in a joint operation by the SAA and Hezbollah. The region was originally occupied by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and al-Qaeda’s al-Nusra Front [now rebranded as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)].

Despite strict security measures in Eastern Qalamun, a militant cell managed to kill several Syrian service members near the town of Rankos in the southern part of the region last month. The SAA responded to the attack by launching a large security operation on January 15, allegedly killing or capturing all militants involved in the attack.
Destroying the militants’ old tunnels will most likely improve the security situation in Eastern Qalamun and along the Syrian-Lebanese border in general.

Yet while the battle hardened group’s mission hasn’t changed, its strategic significance has. Because of its location on occupied Palestine’s northern border,Hezbollah’s aggressive stance has been a serious headache for the IDF since Israel was forced to withdraw from Lebanon in 2000; along with the group’s attempt to corrupt Israeli society by smuggling drugs across the border, a source of both revenue and intelligence. And its evident coordination with Tehran has meant that Iran has now established a
substantial military presence in both Syria and Lebanon, combining with the Syrian army, allied Shia militias from a dozen countries and the IRGC to create what Israeli military officials now see as a single northern front across Syria and Lebanon, rendering previous security doctrines and realities obsolete.
For all intents and purposes, Iran is now sitting on Israel’s northern border, making the Iranian nuclear threat a lot more immediate for Israeli decision-makers. If some of the most sophisticated military grade missiles, rockets and unmanned aircraft systems are making their way into Hezbollah’s hands, it is not difficult to imagine tactical nukes and dirty bombs aimed directly at Israel’s northern civilian population.
But even without nuclear weapons, Hezbollah may have already strengthened to the point that it is the most difficult enemy facing Israel today and one that can not be defeated. Hezbollah today is larger, better trained and better armed than most NATO armies and its enemies know it and tend to give it a wide berth, rather than openly challenge the Shia knights of the battlefield.

Hezbollah created a special unit to target the IDF drug addicted conscripts and facilitated Maronite drug dealers to sell their wares directly to the Zionists cutting out the European middle men. This is a brilliant Hezbollah strategy to weaken the Zionists even further as drug addicted IDF senior offices are even peddling Hezbollah supplied drugs and even giving away secrets and weapons. Hezbollah is operating at so many unique levels that no one knows the real extent of its multi-facted operations globally.
