Hezbollah fired land-attack cruise missiles at Israel for the first time on November 21, well over a year after the outbreak of the clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
The missile attack targeted Hatzor Air Base, which is located to the south of the city of Tel Aviv. Video footage released by Hezbollah’s Military Media on November 23 showed the group’s fighters launching multiple suicide drones, including what appears to be two Iranian-made Shahed-101s, to distract Israeli air defenses before firing the cruise missiles.
The Shahed-101, which was not spotted with Hezbollah before, is said to have a range of 900 kilometers and a cruising speed of 120 kilometers per hour with a warhead weighing eight kilograms.
Meanwhile, the cruise missiles fired by the group appeared to be copies from the Iranian-made Paveh. The missile is powered by a turbo-jet engine and has an estimated range of at least 1,650 kilometers. It is also believed to be equipped with a terrain contour matching navigation system, or TERCOM.
Hebrew media reported multiple warnings and interactions over Israel’s northern, central and southern regions on November 21. However, it is unclear if any of these reports were related to Hezbollah’s attack.
It’s worth noting, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has the authority to censor what it deems to be serious security incidents.
While it is unclear if the cruise missiles reached Hatzor Air Base, the attack itself proved that the IDF has failed to destroy all of Hezbollah offensive capabilities or to just stop the flow of Iranian-made weapons to Lebanon through Syria.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October of last year, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF escalated further on September 30 by launching a limited ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
All in all, the confrontation has so far resulted in 45 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 74 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 3,600 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
