Late on February 8, Hezbollah announced that it had launched “dozens of Katyusha rockets” at a key military base in northern Israel.
In a statement, the group said that it targeted the headquarters of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) 3rd “Alexandroni” Brigade near the settlement of Ein Zeitim in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip as well as recent strikes on southern Lebanon, specifically one that targeted the town of Nabatieh.
Hebrew media said that some 30 rockets were fired from southern Lebanon at Ein Zetim, but didn’t report any casualties or material losses.
The IDF later announced that its artillery fired at the sites in southern Lebanon from which the rockets were launched by Hezbollah.
The attack on Ein Zeitim was apparently a direct response to an Israeli drone strike that targeted a vehicle in Nabatieh earlier.
According to unverified reports in Arab media, the strike killed two members of Hezbollah, including a senior commander identified as Abbas al-Debs. The alleged commander had ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was helping set up Iranian air defenses in Syria. Hezbollah has not yet confirmed or denied any of these claims.
Besides Ein Zeitim, Hezbollah targeted eight other IDF sites and settlements in northern Israel on February 8, including he headquarters of the 769th Territorial Brigade “Hiram” of the 91st Galilee Division in the Kiryat Shmona barracks and Mount Meron air traffic control base. Three Israeli troops were wounded.
The last wave of attacks by Hezbollah marked a serious escalation in the confrontation that broke out on the Lebanese-Israeli border on the backdrop of the war in Gaza.
Israeli Air Force commander Major General Tomer Bar warned Hezbollah on February 8 that Israel was prepared to significantly ratchet up its strikes against Lebanon.
“Hezbollah will continue to pay with the loss of its systems. Dozens of aircraft are now operating in the skies of southern Lebanon, and as soon as the order is given, the dozens will turn into hundreds that will perform the missions within minutes of being scrambled,” Maj. Gen. Bar said at an internal IAF conference, according to a transcript published by the IDF.
The United States, France and several other countries have been making efforts to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Lebanon. However, the Israeli leadership has made unrealistic demands. Hezbollah officials also said that there will be no ceasefire before the end of the war on Gaza.
