Hezbollah announced early on December 21 that it had carried out a rocket attack against the settlement of Qiryat Shemona and fired incendiary munitions at the outskirts of the settlement of Pranit in northern Israel in response to strikes that targeted southern Lebanon.
In two separate statements on the attacks, the group said that it “will never tolerate harming civilians” and warned that it “will not hesitate to defend Lebanese villages and towns.”
Late on December 20, a fighter of Hezbollah was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike that hit his house in the town of Markaba in southern Lebanon. A civilian was also shot and killed by an Israeli sniper while driving near the town of Kfarkela. Another was wounded in the same attack.
Hebrew media reported that some of the rockets launched by Hezbollah hit buildings in Qiryat Shemona. However, there were no casualties.
Later, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced retaliatory strikes against the infrastructure of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. It also said that the launcher used in the attack on Qiryat Shemona was struck.
One of the Israeli strikes targeted the town of Maroun al-Ras. An elderly woman was killed and her husband was wounded in the strike.
Hezbollah has been trading fire with the IDF at the border since its main Palestinian ally, the Hamas Movement, attacked Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7 igniting a war.
The recent casualties brought the civilian death toll from Israeli fire on southern Lebanon in recent weeks to about 20, including journalists and children. In addition, the clashes claimed the lives of 109 Hezbollah members, ten of whom were killed in Syria, and 16 Palestinian fighters.
From its side, Israel acknowledged that eight IDF soldiers and four civilians have been killed on its side of the border with Lebanon.
why does israel even need air defense systems when hezbollah and hamas can launch a thousand rockets and none of them never hits their targets or causes any damage! i just don’t understand why they even bother, they launch these missile strikes and it never causes damage or loss of life on the other side, but the israeli retaliatory strikes are always accurate and on point and causes extreme loss of life on the other side!
