On February 22, Hezbollah launched another wave of attacks against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from its heartland, southern Lebanon.
The group announced in a statement that it had targeted the headquarters of the IDF’s 769th Territorial Brigade “Hiram” in Kiryat Shmona barracks using “suitable weapons”. In two other statements, it said that its fighters struck a house occupied by Israeli troops in the settlement of Kfar Yuval and fired at surveillance equipment in the Birkat Risha site.
Hezbollah fighters also shelled the sites of Ruwaisat al-Alam and Sammaqa, according to two more statements released by the group.
The attacks were carried out in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in response to recent Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, Hezbollah noted in its statements.
Separately, the IDF announced that interceptor missiles were fired at two “suspicious aerial targets” that entered Israeli airspace from Lebanon. Trails of smoke from the interceptors were seen from the northern Israeli city of Safed. The IDF said that it was unclear if the targets were downed. Hezbollah didn’t claim responsibility.
In response to Hezbollah’s recent attacks, the IDF said that its fighter jets attacked a building in the town of Maroun al-Ras and other infrastructure belonging to the group in the towns of Kafr Kila and Khaim in southern Lebanon. A tank also shelled an area near the town of Jebbayn, according to the IDF.
Additionally, Lebanese media reported an Israeli strike on a residential multi-storey building in the town of Kfar Roummane in southern Lebanon. Four people were killed, according to preliminary information.
Hezbollah and its allies have been launching attacks from southern Lebanon against the IDF since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
So far, the clashes on the border have resulted in six civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least ten IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 300 people have been killed, including 195 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 40 civilians.
