The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on October 22 that two reservists were killed and three others were wounded by Hezbollah fire.
One of the slain soldiers was the deputy commander of the Alon Brigade’s 9308th Battalion. He was killed during fighting in southern Lebanon, according to the military.
The other slain soldier was serving in the ranks of the 7338th Artillery Regiment’s 508th Battalion. The military said that he was killed in a rocket barrage that targeted the settlement of Neot Mordechai. Three other soldiers of the same unit were seriously wounded in the attack.
Hezbollah launched some 65 rockets at northern and central Israel during the day. The IDF said that many of the rockets were intercepted, but admitted that there were impacts. Hebrew media reported that a man was wounded in the Galilee region.
According to the group, the rocket attacks were directed against several targets, including a military-industrial complex, an observatory, and the headquarters of Unit 8200 near the city of Tel Aviv, as well as the Stella Maris naval base close to the port city of Haifa. It also announced a drone attack on the Eliakim base in Haifa.
Hezbollah’s military media released video footage showing the launch of Nasir-2 precision-guided artillery rockets at the the Stella Maris naval base. The Nasir-2 appears to be a version of the Syrian-made M302 rocket with a guidance kit. It has a range of 150 kilometers and a warhead weighting 140 kg.
Another video released by the military media a day earlier showed two strikes with Iranian-made Almas anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) against a gathering of Israeli troops and a Humvee armored vehicle of the IDF near the border site of Ramia.
In addition, Hezbollah announced on October 22 that its fighters struck six Merkava main battle tanks with ATGMs and fired anti-aircraft missiles at two Hermes 450 combat drones, shooting one of them down.
The IDF admitted that one of its drones was hit and crashed in southern Lebanon, without providing any further details on the incident.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF announced the launch of a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon on September 30. Since then, Israeli troops have not yet made any real gains and Hezbollah rocket attacks have been increasing.
The confrontation has so far resulted in 29 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 44 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 2,500 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
