Hezbollah has attacked a number of Israeli military sites with heavy rockets and shot down a combat drone following another wave of deadly strikes on southern Lebanon.
Late on May 31, one Hezbollah member was killed and another wounded in an Israeli attack in the town of Ain Qana, Xinhua reported, citing Lebanese military sources. Another Israeli raid in the town of Adloun in the Sidon district killed a woman and wounded four other civilians, according to the Chinese news agency. Hezbollah acknowledged the death of a fighter after the strikes.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) later said it struck “significant assets” of Hezbollah in Ain Qana, Aadloun and the town of Hmaileh.
Hezbollah mourned another fighter on June 1. He was reportedly killed in a strike that targeted the town of Majdel Selm. The IDF later announced that it struck a motorcycle with two fighters near the town.
The deadly strikes provoked a fierce response from Hezbollah. The group announced eight attacks against the IDF by the early afternoon of June 1.
In separate statements, Hezbollah said its fighters fired rockets at the al-Baghdadi site, attacked a temporary deployment point near the Yiftah barracks with suicide drones, struck two building occupied by Israeli troops in the settlements of Shomera and Netu’a, fired Burkan improvised heavy rockets at the Headquarters of the 769th Brigade in the Kiryat Shemona barracks, destroyed surveillance equiptment of the IDF in the site of al-Marj, shelled artillery positions in the area of Khirbet Maar and shot down a Hermes 900 combat drone over southern Lebanon.
The group noted in its statements that the attacks were not carried out in response to recent Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, but also in support of the Palestinian people and resistance in the Gaza Strip.
Hebrew media reported heavy damage in the Kiryat Shmona barracks, while the IDF acknowledged that one of its combat drones was shot down over southern Lebanon with a surface-to-air missile.
The Hermes 900 is a medium-size drone with an endurance of over 30 hours and a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet. It was designed by Israel’s Elbit to carry out reconnaissance, surveillance, communications relay and attack missions. A single drone of this model could cost more than $6 millions.
Hezbollah is thought to possess several air defense systems that could defeat combat drones like the Hermes 900, including a missile-drone hybrid codenamed by the United States military and intelligence as the “358” missile. The missile, which was spotted in Lebanon before, is said to have a range of 150 kilometers.
This was the fourth combat drone of the IDF to be shot down by Hezbollah since the clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border broke out on the backdrop of the war on Gaza.
So far, the border clashes have resulted in ten civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 14 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 308 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 80 civilians.
